Types of Water Treatment Chemicals
Ferric Chloride
Role: Coagulation
How It Works: Ferric chloride is a powerful coagulant that helps bind fine particles in water into larger clumps (flocs). These flocs can then be easily removed through sedimentation or filtration. It is particularly effective in wastewater treatment for removing phosphates and suspended solids.
Ferric Sulphate
Role: Coagulant
How It Works: Similar to ferric chloride, ferric sulphate acts as a coagulant, making suspended solids stick together, allowing them to settle more easily. It is especially effective in the removal of colloidal particles and for treating industrial wastewater.
Phosphoric Acid
Role: Corrosion Inhibitor
How It Works: Phosphoric acid is used to prevent corrosion in metal pipes and tanks by forming a protective layer of phosphate salts. It is particularly beneficial in systems where water is highly corrosive, extending the lifespan of the infrastructure.
Poly Aluminium Chloride (PAC)
Role: Coagulant
How It Works: PAC is one of the most efficient coagulants for water treatment. It helps remove suspended solids and organic materials by promoting the formation of larger flocs, which can then be filtered out. It works over a wide pH range, making it versatile for different water conditions.
Sodium Chlorite
Role: Precursor for Chlorine Dioxide
How It Works: Sodium chlorite is used to generate chlorine dioxide, an effective disinfectant. Chlorine dioxide is ideal for killing bacteria and viruses, and is often used in municipal water treatment for its powerful oxidizing properties without forming harmful chlorination by-products.
Application of Water Treatment Chemicals
Coagulation
When added to wastewater, effective coagulants bind organic and inorganic particles together so they can be filtered out in subsequent water treatment stages.
Corrosion and Scale Inhibition
Industrial equipment is prone to corrosion and scale formation. Corrosion and scale inhibitors prevent premature part failure.
Foam Control

Flocculation

Microbial Control

Skin contact: Take off contaminated clothes and rinse with running water.
Eye contact: Lift the eyelids and rinse with running water or saline. Seek medical attention.
Inhalation: Leave the scene to a place with fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Drink enough warm water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.
Hazardous characteristics: No special combustion and explosion characteristics. High thermal decomposition produces toxic sulfide fumes.
Fire extinguishing method: Firefighters must wear full-body fireproof and anti-gas suits and extinguish fires in the upwind direction. When extinguishing fires, move the container from the fire scene to an open area as much as possible.
Emergency treatment: Isolate the leaked contaminated area and restrict access. It is recommended that emergency response personnel wear dust masks (full-face masks) and anti-gas suits. Collect in dry, clean, covered containers with a clean shovel and transfer to a safe place. If a large amount of leakage occurs, collect and recycle or transport to a waste disposal site for disposal.
